Solo’s Culture


Kirab Kebo Bule
Surakarta which is commonly known as the central city of Javanese culture because Solo has been the centre of the Javanese traditions enlargement. The prosperity of Surakarta started since 19th century which has pressed the development of so many various Javanese literatures such the dancing, the food, the clothing, and many other cultural expressions. People may know there is a cultural “competition” between Yogyakarta and Surakarta as they gave birth known as Surakarta Style and Yogyakarta Style in the fields of dancing, clothing, puppet art, gamelan, and many more. In fact, both cultures have many different in many ways.
            Known as the city of culture, Surakarta indeed has so many cultural events which have been celebrated in years, such Kirab Kebo Bule and Solo Batik Carnival (SBC). Kirab Kebo Bule is an event in which being celebrated in Satu Suro. Traditional Javanese people rejoice Satu Suro with much gratitude, concern, and meditation. Kirab Kebo Bule itself has been being celebrated for more than twenty years. In this event, there will be convoy of seven Caucasian kebo Kiai Slamet that come out from the east gate of Surakarta Hadiningrat Keraton led by five people known as "semut ireng" to escorted them while spreading cassava to be eaten by those buffaloes.
            Those seven buffaloes are in the first line as the road opener for the procession to go around Surakarta city. Behind those buffaloes, there are abdi dalem who are consisting of several women come out from the main door of Kori Kamandungan carrying offers to be given to the buffaloes. On the next line, there are dozens of abdi dalem and royal family carrying seven palace heirlooms.
