Not only about culture and history, the City of
Surakarta or more familiarly called as Kota Solo is a paradise for those food
enthusiasts. There are sundry places that can be visited in various parts of
the city. As a city that is very firm in its culture, Solo local citizen
prefers to promote traditional culinary rather than following the modern era
that began to develop western culinary as their culinary business. The term
"old but gold" seems very suitable to describe the state of Solo
culinary tourism that is very loved by the domestic and international tourists!
Here are some names of food that Kota Solo has that
we (the team) had tasted and enjoyed while settling in the city for about a
month;
1. Serabi Solo
The first time we visited Kota Solo, we wanted to
try this traditional snack, while waiting for the train to depart at Purwosari
station, we decided to walk around the station and managed to visit a street
vendor who sells pancakes or Serabi with various flavors, like: original,
chocolate, and cheese. It is tasty while served warm and it is a proper meal
for hungry procrastination snacks. With a fluffy texture and distinctive sweet
taste, Serabi Solo is a-must-try snack while visiting Kota Solo, for it has a
very affordable price, around Rp. 2,000, -
The most recommended place for Serabi outlets is
Serabi Notosuman, the name Notosuman itself was once the name of an area in
Kota Solo, now it is Jalan Mohammad Yamin.
2. Selat Solo
One of a Kind! A Food that can only be found in
Solo! Selat Solo is one of the mainstay foods in Kota Solo. There are a lot of food
stalls and restaurants or even five-star hotels that have Selat Solo as one of
the main course. The team had the opportunity to enjoy this food on Jalan Prof.
DR. Soepomo Sriwedari, Laweyan, Surakarta City. The price for a portion of Selat
Solo is Rp. 16,000, -, consist of sliced beef and various vegetable stews
such as; carrots, potatoes, beans, boiled eggs, lettuce, pickles, fried
potatoes poured with a unique sweet and savory sauce. Selat Solo has a taste
that is almost similar to Galantin and Bistik (Steak).
3. Liwet Rice (Nasi Liwet)
This one certain food is a very well-known and almost
all cities in Indonesia have a restaurant or food stalls that serve this one particular
famous menu. Although this food is easily found in other cities, you must try
Nasi Liwet that specially made by Solo’s Locals.
It was a sunny Sunday morning, the right time to
come and enjoy CFD (Car Free Day) at
Jalan Slamet Riyadi around 7 AM . Lots of food and beverage being traded
on the road side, but our choice is
focused on Nasi Liwet which looks very tempting with affordable price around
Rp. 12,000, -. Sitting on the mat available and enjoying the savory of Nasi
Liwet as breakfast feels so good while seeing people passing by, enjoying their
Sunday morning.
On the other day, the team had the opportunity to
enjoy a complete portion of Naasi Liwet in one of the small restaurant near
Purwosari Station although it was cost a little higher Rp. 20,000,- but it was
served with more portions and more complete side dishes. Very worth trying when
you visit Surakarta City!
4. Timlo
This one is as unique as its name, Timlo is a
legendary Solo food. The food in the form of soup with glass noodles, pieces of
Solo sausage, shredded chicken, carrots and slices of cooked egg with soy
sauce. Sometimes slices chicken and omelet are also being added. Then, doused
with clear gravy like soup. One of the mainstay stalls selling Timlo is at
Pasar Gede.
The team has a chance to taste the glory of Timlo in
a very crowded Timlo Sastro stall, Timlo Sastro is located at the back side of
Pasar Gede. The team ordered a complete package of Timlo that cost Rp. 18,000.
The price offered is very worthy to the delicacy of the dish while enjoying the
atmosphere of Pasar Gede which is no less legendary.
5. Zuppa Soup
This food is the locals’ favorite to be enjoyyed in
the morning. Zupa Soup is a baked cream soup served in a bowl and above it is placed
a puff pastry. Here, the soup is a creamy corn soup with extra pieces of button
mushrooms and smoked meat. The soup is quite tasty, although it is not too
prominent while the pastry itself is plain with a strong pastry aroma. Best served
while still warm with tomato sauce as topping.
Very easy to find in Sunday CFD at Jl. Slamet
Riyadi. Our team tried one portion of Zuppa Soup at the most crowded stand around
because we are so curious about its taste! A portion for Rp. 8,000 is very
affordable!
6. Es Kapal
Our Team's favorite drink during CFDs and when
coming home from work, enjoying Es Kapal or ice boats during the day is very
refreshing. Its name is coming from the floating bread that is being added on
the top of the glass, iit just looks like a boat. Es kapal is basically a Coconut
milk combined with fresh bread and ice cubes, a good drink that is perfect for
relieving thirst after tired of working. The most Es Kapal stall happens to be
close to where we work, its cart can be easily found around Sriwedari Park area,
the cost is only Rp. 3,000.
This ancient drink still has many foodie fans in the
midst of millennial generation. Highly recommended if you want to taste savory
sweet beverage!
7. Jajanan Angkringan
Some cities in Central Java are very well known for their
Angkringan, such as Jogja, Solo also does not want to be outdone when it comes
to angkringan stalls, basically all angkringan places serve foods and drinks that
are almost the same, mainly roasted foods and warm drinks become the mainstay
menus, but what is highly anticipated from going to Angkringan stalls is the
tradition of "cangkruk" or gathering with the relations. Our team
visited Warung Angkringan around Pasar Gede. The atmosphere that was built was
truly warm and able to form an unforgettable memory. Simple dishes and sitting on
a mat on the road side while looking at the bustle of Pasar Gede that has never
been "sare" (sleep) made our trip to Solo became more memorable.
Coming to Angkringan stalls and enjoying their particular dishes is something
that should be tried when you visit Kota Solo.
There are a
lot more culinary that are very special and delicious in Kota Solo, sadly the
team has not had the opportunity to taste all special foods there, which if one
day we have the opportunity to visit Solo again, we will definitely try more and
more and more! It was a pleasure to be in the city of a thousand cultures. Solo
has million charms that cannot be found in other cities, even though our team
comes from various city outside Kota Solo, but we always want to go back there
and enjoy the hospitality of the city. Just please make sure to come to the
city of Surakarta and enjoy an unforgettable experience by yourself!
Thank you for reading this long post. Hopefully what
we have done will help you to understand and enjoy your visit to Solo more than
